Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is often called as zirconia in industries, it is a white crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is one of the most studied and used ceramic materials. This material and its products have excellent physical characteristics and unique chemical properties. It has three phases with monoclinic below 1170 °C, tetragonal between 1170 °C and 2370 °C, and cubic above 2370 °C.


Pure ZrO2 indicates a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature and will transition to tetragonal and cubic at successive higher temperatures. The mostly popular used zirconia is that of tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), which is indicative of polycrystalline zirconia composed of only metastable tetragonal phase. When zirconia is mixed with some additives, both the tetragonal and cubic phases are partially stabilized. Effective stabilizers include yttrium oxide (Y2O3, yttria), magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO) and ceriumoxide (Ce2O3). They are usually called Y-PSZ, Mg-PSZ, Ca-PSZ and Ce-PSZ.
